Air conditioners are great when it comes to heating and cooling our homes. They are convenient but can also be noisy, but there is a way to fix that. Have you heard of using an air compressor blanket to reduce this noise? That begs the question, what is an air conditioner sound blanket? Veterans AC & Heat will guide you below on what an air conditioner sound blanket is and how it will help you reduce the noise.
How Do Air Conditioner Sound Blankets Work?
As temperatures outside rise, homeowners have their AC turned on more often. Consider looking into an air conditioning sound blanket if you have a noisy AC unit. This blanket works by covering the air compressor, which is the noisiest part of an AC.
The blanket absorbs the noise that the compressor makes. It is made of acoustic glass insulation and is responsible for sound waves. To reduce noise even better, the blanket has a heavy rubber barrier.
Most air conditioner blankets, or compressor blankets, reduce noise levels by 65 percent. Now, many people think it is unsafe to use an AC sound blanket. It is true the motor in the AC unit has an internal cooling system refrigerant. So, caution is needed. We suggest you follow all instructions for installation and use to stay safe.

How to Install an AC Sound Blanket
AC compressor blankets are effective and easy to install and can achieve sound reduction. But the good thing is you don’t need a professional to install it. Many people also think it will affect how your AC works, but it doesn’t.
Here’s what you need:
- Phillips head screwdriver
- Flat head screwdriver
- Gloves
- AC compressor blanket
Open Access Panel
1| When you start soundproofing, ensure your unit is not plugged into power.
2| Remove your air conditioner’s outer panel. You first want to remove the shipping screws from the corners and sides using your Phillips head screwdriver.
3| After you’ve removed the outer panel get your Flathead screwdriver and turn the access panel screws 1/4 of the way. While doing this step, it will release the access panels.
4| Some AC units have a single access panel, and others may have two. Either way, you must remove the access panels the same way. Doing this step exposes the AC compressor.
Prepare the Sound Blanket
Take the AC compressor blanket from the package, unfolding it carefully. Hold the blanket at two corners and lightly tug the blanket several times until it expands. Repeat this step on the other two corners until the material is entirely open.
Repeat the same process for the top section of the blanket and set it aside.
Cover AC Compressor with the Blanket
Wrap the AC compressor with the sound blanket from left to right. Make sure you are starting at the compressor’s base and working your way to the top. Hold the starting corner and place and pull it while working the remaining parts around the compressor.

Secure the Sound Blanket
Take the slots in the blanket and line them up with the compressor suction line. Velcro strips will come with the material when you purchase them.
Use that to hold the compressor blanket in place. Please note that you must secure the blanket as directed to the right of the compressor’s suction line.
You will also want to ensure that you attach Velcro strips from top to bottom. The blanket should not have any gaps or lifts. The blanket should be attached firmly without any broken seams.
Cover the Terminal Box
The terminal box is part of the compressor and secures two or more wires together. It also works to connect outlets and electrical switches to the mains.
It is also a good idea to cover the terminal box separately from the compressor. Covering it will not affect the compressors’ function.
Secure the Seams Together
The two seams of the compressor blanket must be pulled together while wrapping it around the body. Make sure the velcro strips are aligned on top of one another; it should make a single velcro seam.
Aligning The Sound Blanket
Line the top of the sound blanket with the discharge line. Then grab the top of the blanket flap you prepared earlier and attach it to the top of the Velcro edge. The last thing you’ll do is put the exterior panels back into place using the screwdrivers that you use to remove them. Continue this process for the additional compressors on your AC unit.

Performance with Sound Blanket
Being able to use a sound blanket will not affect your compressor’s performance at all. The sound blankets are a convenient noise reduction for AC and heat pumps, and most manufacturers use them to reduce noise levels.
Sound blankets are cost-effective solutions for a noisy unit compared to relocating and replacing them. Some people even build walls or sound barriers to go around their units. But purchasing a sound blanket is a much easier way to fix this problem.
Even if your AC unit isn’t bothering you with sound, but it is for your neighbor, the sound blanket is still a quick solution without removing or relocating the unit. Sound blankets are the simplest solution.
Are AC Sound Blankets Safe?
If you are interested in getting an AC compressor sound blanket, you may wonder if they are safe for your unit. The short answer is yes.
The blankets are designed to insulate your compressor and prevent the loss of heat. This can also save you money on your energy bill. The blankets also provide a barrier between a hot compressor and any flammable materials that are nearby it. This is an important safety feature for your home or business.
Will The Blanket Overheat?
Homeowners often worry that their air compressor sound blanket will overheat. Luckily that does not happen. Not only does your air compressor sound blanket help reduce noise, but it will also keep your air conditioner from overheating.
The sound blanket works by absorbing sound and heat produced by the compressor. The good news is the blanket will prevent the heat from building up and causing damage to the unit.
